Tropical Island Safety
Though it is a pleasure to laze around in the sandy beaches of tropical islands, there are many things to that can get in our way of having a memorable and wonderful holiday. Islands can be a lot of fun but if you don’t practice good safety, they can be a disaster. You could get sick or injured. Though most people only get sun stroke or a few bug bits, there are many things that can happen to you while away. Here are some tips that can help you stay safe during your next island holiday:
The most dangerous things to your health will be bug bites. Since most tropical islands have thick rain forests and have a lot of humidity, they contain many deadly insects that might bite and cause you harm. You want to make sure you dont get malaria or dengue fever as well sick from some other insect bit. Bug spray should be taken on your trip. if you go outdoors, you want to always make sure you apply bug spray, especially during sunrise or sunset when bugs are the most active.
Don’t forget your common sense at the airport. Be sure to watch your belongings and other personal items while you are away. Most islands have a lot of tourists going to them making them rich with cash and the target of thieves or con artists. Be sure to watch your valuables and don’t flash a lot of money around. Being on vacation is no excuse for not practicing common sense.
Be careful not to spend too much time in the sun. This may cause sunburns and damage your skin. Also remember to drink plenty of water. You are likely to get dehydrated due to the heat of the sun. Try to sit in shade and also eat fruits and drink juices to keep your body cool and nourished. Make sure you use sun screen lotions and creams to avoid getting a sunburn. Apply it every time you go out and wait until it dries before you go into the sun. Sunscreen doesn’t work when it’s still wet.
Finally, be careful when you go do adventure activities. There are are many activities to do on tropical islands such as scuba diving, jungle treks, sailing, or even a cooking or dance class. Be sure you wear the proper clothing and footwear on whatever activity you do. Dressing right is important. More important though is that you go with a licensed guide or tour operator who has travel insurance in case something goes wrong. If there is an accident, you don’t want to be paying out of pocket for the health care.
Islands are pretty safe destinations- more so than say a safari in Africa. However, no place is 100% safe and there are still many things that can go wrong while you are on holiday and lounging on a beach. Be sure to practice good island safety tips so that you will not have your holiday ruined by some small disaster that could have been easily avoided. No one wants a holiday full of bad memories.
